Trevecca Nazarene's defense held Kentucky Wesleyan scoreless in the final 1:23 to edge the Panthers 79-77 in their own Pops Duncan Classic in Nashville.
Two free throws by
Lauren Goffinet brought KWC within one at 78-77. The Panthers had two tries at the basket in the final eight seconds including
Bianca Barton's jumper at the buzzer.
The contest saw 14 lead changes and four ties. The Panthers biggest lead was eight points in the first half and the Trojans had a nine-point advantage with 9:36 left.
Karly Rhoads led KWC with 15 points while Goffinet and
T'Essence Phelps added 13 each.
Phelps grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. Goffinet had six rebounds and Rhoads captured five.
The Panthers made nine three-pointers including Phelps going three-for-three compared to Trevecca's four. KWC led at the free throw line by connecting on 20 of 22 free throws.
The Trojans (5-4) outscored the Panthers in the paint 44-14.
KWC (2-2) will host Indiana Wesleyan on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
