Panthers look to bounce back today against Urbana

Game Notes

Will Barnes will likely return at quarterback when Kentucky Wesleyan College hosts Urbana at 1 p.m. Saturday at Steele Stadium.

Barnes sat out a large part of the second half after getting hit on a fumble that went for a touchdown in KWC's 41-17 loss to McKendree last Saturday.

"Will did not receive a concussion last week," KWC coach Brent Holsclaw said in an email. "With the injury against Missouri S&T, we felt it was in the best interest of Will that he sit out the remainder of last week's game. We do intend on playing him."

The Panthers (1-4, 0-3 in GLVC) are trying to limit turnovers as they face an Urbana squad that is 3-2, 1-1 in the GLVC.

"We turned the ball over three times and two were returned for touchdowns," Holsclaw said. "The fumbled punt gave McKendree the ball inside the 15 and resulted in another touchdown. That was 21 points off turnovers. Alabama is not going to win a lot of games turning the ball over three times that all result in scores."

The Panthers have tried going back to the fundamentals on carrying the ball and securing punts. The Panthers had no turnovers in their only win against Kentucky State.

A couple of bright spots for the Panthers have been the kicking of Matt Wilson, who is 7-of-7 on field goals; and the tackling of Matt Smith, who is averaging 11.6 tackles a game.

"I like our team, they work hard and have a tremendous attitude," Holsclaw said. "I take full responsibility for our losses. I've got to do a better job pushing them to play four complete quarters."
