Box Score Game Notes
The No. 2 Panthers continue this Great Lakes Valley Conference road trip today at William Jewell in Liberty, Mo.
They finish it up much closer to home on Monday, with a mammoth matchup against No. 7 Southern Indiana at Evansville.
KWC coach Todd Lee doesn't think KWC will lighten up in the middle of all these events, or look ahead to USI.
“We're going to watch film, and hopefully the team will take same approach that the staff does,” Lee said. “We always talk about finishing the weekend. We've got to have a good practice (Friday), and hopefully we're not looking anywhere but the game (today).
The Cardinals (4-7, 2-3) fell to USI 80-71 on Thursday, and were competitive for most of the game. They played very well at Northern Kentucky before dropping a 76-72 decision in overtime on Jan. 5.
William Jewell has some size with three 6-foot-6 players starting. Nick Larson, 6-6, 255 pounds, is the biggest of those players. He averages nearly 18 points and 11 rebounds a game.
Mark Mason is a 6-foot guard who could also be troublesome with his speed. He scored 30 points against USI with a lot of drives to the basket. Mason also hit 12-of-14 free throws.
“He is a very athletic guard,” Lee said.
What KWC's starters can do is well known, and it is getting more contributions off the bench as the season rolls on. Marseilles Stewart scored 13 points and pulled down nine rebounds in 17 minutes against Rockhurst. Kreig Oxley was 4-of-7 on 3-pointers for 12 points and also passed out four assists at Rockhurst.
“Even though they come off the bench, they are really starters,” Lee said. “We play them a lot at the end of games. We expect them to give us contributions.”
