Panthers rides 25-0 run to blowout

Box Score

Second-ranked Kentucky Wesleyan blistered host Rockhurst with a 25-0 second-half run and went on to post a 93-62 victory on Thursday night before a sparse crowd at Mason-Halpin Fieldhouse in Kansas City, Mo.

The victory lifts the Panthers to 13-0 overall and 5-0 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play entering Saturday afternoon's game at William Jewell in Liberty, Mo.

“We played really well in the second half,” KWC head coach Todd Lee said. “We played very good defense, and that allowed us to put that big run together — you don't see that (kind of run) on the road very often.

“Our defense sparked us. Cardell (McFarland) was able to get it going in the open court, and we're at our best when we're converting in transition like that.

It starts with defense, though, along with rebounding.”

Wesleyan, which hit 65 percent from the field in the second half, limited the Hawks to just 35 percent shooting for the game (22-of-63) and won the rebounding battle by a healthy 44-27 margin.

It was, however, a competitive game for 20 minutes — the Panthers holding only a 41-35 lead at intermission.

“We were a little stagnant in the first half against their zone,” said KWC reserve guard Kreig Oxley, who came off the bench to supply 12 points and four assists. “We picked it up at the defensive end after halftime and that got us going on that big run.

“It's great anytime you can win a conference game on the road. To win one by 31 points is very special.”

Oxley was one of five double-digit scorers for Wesleyan.

Anthony Young led KWC with 23 points and 10 rebounds, McFarland had 16 points and three assists,

Marseilles Stewart climbed off the bench to produce 13 points, nine rebounds and three steals, and Cornbread Walker added 12 points and four assists.

The Panthers got a game-best six assists from Brandon Johnson, and Dominique Dawson secured nine rebounds.

KWC finished at 58 percent from the field, including 50 percent marksmanship from 3-point range (9-of-18), and hit 74 percent from the foul stripe (20-of-27).

“We got to play a lot of guys and everybody contributed,” Lee said. “That's great, too, because the guys who don't always get to play a lot in games bust their butts every day in practice to help make us a better basketball team.”

Rockhurst, which also shot well from 3-point range (10-of-22) got 11 points each from reserves Terance Tatum and Russell Burns.

The Hawks slipped to 5-8 overall and 2-3 in the GLVC.
