Kentucky Wesleyan drops season opener

Box Score

Kentucky Wesleyan College didn't have a successful start to the 2011 football season.

The Panthers ran into a buzzsaw called Indianapolis and fell 41-0 on a hot, humid Thursday night at Key Stadium in Indy.

Chris Mills threw for 177 yards and three touchdowns for Indy in the season-opener for both teams. Mills hit 13-of-20 passes without an interception. Ryan Forney caught two touchdowns and had four catches for 65 yards.

Joumeel McLaurine scored on a 29-yard run for Indy to put it ahead 20-0 with 3:22 left before halftime

Klay Fiechter and Matt Ripp each had 4-yard touchdown runs for the Greyhounds.

Indy was 4-for-4 in red zone conversions. KWC also had a hard time getting Indy's offense off the field at times. Indy was 8-of-11 on third-down conversions.

“We knew we had our hands full when we came up here,” KWC coach Brent Holsclaw said. “When you play against the big boys, you had better bring your “A” game, and we brought probably our “D” game.”

KWC managed just 186 yards in total offense and gave up 398 to Indy. The Panthers had a hard time establishing the running game, netting only 50 yards.

KWC quarterback Chris Owen made 15-of-32 passes for 117 yards and one interception.

“Chris is going to get better,” Holsclaw said.

KWC had problems in the kicking game and also showed some nerves early in the contest against one of the more established programs in NCAA Division II football.

“The initial shock of this is over,” Holsclaw said. “Credit Indianapolis, they set the bar for us. They are the kind of program we want to be.”

KWC had some success moving the ball in the second quarter, moving from its own 1-yard line to the Indy 40 over an 8:59 span.

KWC will be on the road again next Saturday when they travel to Pikeville.
