The Kentucky Wesleyan football team will be trying to get on the board in more ways than one today when they visit Pikeville University for a matchup with the upstart Bears.

Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. CDT.

The Panthers (0-1) are not only looking for their first victory of the season,. they are looking for their first points of the season after suffering a 41-0 season-opening defeat at Indianapolis on Sept. 1.

KWC struggled throughout against the Greyhounds, who built up a 20-0 halftime lead and rolled up 398 yards of total offense -- 220 of it on the ground. The Panthers, meanwhile, were limited to just 50 yards rushing, averaging only 2.4 yards per carry.


Senior quarterback Chris Owen completed 17-of-34 passes for 136 yards, with one interception. Lamont McMurry paced KWC with 59 yards on 10 carries.

Pikeville, under the direction of first-year head coach Dudley Hilton, is coming off a season-opening 63-18 rout of visiting Southern Virginia.

In their opener, the high-powered Bears rolled up 623 yards of total offense and were led by quarterback Trevor Hoskins, who was 17-of-28 for 382 yards and four touchdowns.

Big-threat receivers include Jordan Amis ( five catches, 124, 2 TDs) and Axxel Rivas (four catches, 97 yards, TD).

Pikeville (1-0) features a host of capable runners, who combined to rush for an average of 6.3 yards per carry against Southern Virginia.

Last season, KWC knocked off Pikeville 34-28 at Steele Stadium, but the Panthers are yet to win in Pikeville, where the Bears posted a 23-0 shutout in 2004 and a 47-33 conquest in 2005.
