Box Score

The Kentucky Wesleyan College men's basketball team got its toughest stretch of the season off to a solid start Friday night.

The Panthers were led by 19 points from Cardell McFarland and by a defense that held Missouri-St. Louis, and guard Gerald Fulton, in check in a 76-61 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory in St. Louis.

It was the second straight win for KWC (15-5, 7-5 GLVC), which had split its last six games. It also guaranteed the Panthers a berth in the GLVC Tournament.

The win gives the Panthers a momentum boost on the start of a four-game conference road swing that also includes stops at Maryville on Sunday and Northern Kentucky and Indianapolis before returning home Feb. 14 to face Southern Indiana.

"It's always big to win that first game on the road," KWC coach Todd Lee said. "Momentum. Now, you can focus on Maryville and the guys have got some confidence. That first game on the road is really big."

Wesleyan handed the Tritons (14-7, 8-5) their first loss on their home floor this season.

Lee gave much of the credit to the Panthers' defense, which held Missouri-St. Louis to 39 percent shooting (22-for-57) and held Fulton, the GLVC's leading scorer, to 10 points.

Rebounding also made a difference, especially in the second half.

The Tritons outrebounded KWC 19-18 in the first half, but the Panthers regrouped and held a 39-30 edge in the final tally.

KWC's offensive balance allowed it to build a 35-24 lead in the first half, but Missouri-St. Louis managed to trim its deficit to 36-32 at the break.

The Panthers didn't take long to get rolling in the second half. Kwan Waller converted on a two-pointer with 12:40 to play that pushed Wesleyan out to a 51-37 lead.

Both teams then traded buckets, and Waller cleared the glass after a Tritons' miss and got the ball out to Travis Owsley, who streaked to the bucket and hit a shot to stretch KWC's lead to 16, 55-39, with 12:01 to go.

Marseilles Stewart added 15 points for KWC and was 3-for-5 from 3-point range. Anthony Young finished with 14 and grabbed nine boards. Chris Williams finished with 10 points.

Dominic Williams led the Tritons with 15 points. The Panthers used teamwork to help keep tabs on Fulton as Waller, Brandon Johnson and Tyler McManaman rotated guarding the 6-foot-2 junior guard. Fulton was averaging 23 points a game.

"I was real proud of the guys," Lee said. "I knew it would be a tough game. Our guys really battled, especially on the boards in the second half... That was the difference in the game, I thought."
