Kentucky Wesleyan captured their first win of season with a 9-8 win over West Virginia State in the opening game of the Pioneer Classic at Tusculum College in Greeneville, Tenn. on Saturday morning.

Katy Kruse doubled to rightfield to knock-in Jackie Porter for the tying run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Laura Helms followed with game-winning double to score Kruse for the winning run.

Ashlee Winstead earned her first win of the season.

Kruse recorded two hits, two RBIs and score one run and Meagan Sallee had two hits, two RBIs and two runs in KWC's win.

The Panthers fell later in the day to West Virginia Wesleyan 5-2 and again 9-0 on Sunday afternoon.

For the three- game weekend, Helms led with four hits and one double while Sallee and Clarissa Smith batted .429 with three hits in seven at bats with one double. Salle also collected four RBIs and Traci Sanders scored three runs.

KWC (1-8) opens Great Lakes Valley Conference play with a double-header at Missouri S&T on March 12.
