Box Score

Kentucky Wesleyan College needed overtime for the second straight year to win 81-78 at Wisconsin-Parkside on Thursday night in the Great Lakes Valley Conference opener.

Anthony Young made a one-handed 3-point shot with a Parkside defender all over him to tie the score 72-all and force the overtime.

Then Young made a steal and a drive to put the Panthers ahead for good in the extra period as the No. 9 Panthers escaped.

Kreig Oxley made two free throws with three seconds left for the final margin. Those were the only points Oxley scored after he grabbed a defensive rebound and was fouled with KWC clinging to a 79-78 lead.

Although Young had struggled at times, scoring 11 points, he was confident when he had a chance to keep the game going.

“I hit crazy shots like that all the time in practice, I didn't feel any pressure,” Young said.

KWC coach Todd Lee said Young was trying to draw a foul with the way the senior put the shot up.

“His body was kind of sideways, and he had a tough time getting the shot through the guy's arms,” Lee said. “I looked at it as it was heading toward the rim, and I thought 'that's got a shot.' ”

Cardell McFarland hit a 3-pointer with 3:10 left in overtime to give KWC its first lead since the first half. McFarland finished with a game-high 24 points. He also had two assists and made five steals.

“Cardell really did a great job when we didn't have much else (offensively),” Lee said. “Brandon Johnson was the heart and soul of the team in the second half. Brandon made so many big plays down the stretch (of regulation). He really carried us in the second half.”

Johnson had a pretty full stat line in 43 minutes on the floor. He scored 19 points, hitting 8-of-22 shots from the field. Johnson also pulled down six rebounds, passed for four assists, had three steals and three turnovers.

Dominique Dawson was efficient with the touches he got inside, scoring 12 points and pulling down eight rebounds in 35 minutes. He made 4-of-5 from the floor and all four of his free throws.

KWC had a tough time shooting the ball, making 29-of-74 for 39 percent from the field. The Panthers were 3-of-15 from 3-point range for 20 percent. They were very solid from the free-throw line, hitting 20-of-25 for 80 percent.

Lee noted James Herzog's contributions off the bench with five rebounds and some active defensive play in just seven minutes.

KWC takes a 5-0 record (1-0 GLVC) to Lewis for a Saturday matchup at 3 p.m.

Parkside fell to 4-2 and lost its GLVC opener. It was led by Ziggy Riauka's 15 points off the bench. Riauka made 5-of-7 from the floor and 4-of-5 free throws.

Jeremy Saffold scored 13 points and Leneal Harris had 10.

Parkside dominted KWC on the glass, 55-43, and had 19 offensive rebounds.

“That was way too many,” Lee said. “Lewis is a good defensive team and a good rebounding team, so we're going to have to shore that up.”
