Kentucky Wesleyan fades late, falls 69-59

Box Score
Kentucky Wesleyan College had a good first half at South Carolina, but the Gamecocks turned it up in the second 20 minutes.

The Gamecocks went on a big run starting at the end of the first half, and extended it into the first 10 minutes of the second on the way to a 69-59 win at Colonial Life Arena in Columbia, S.C.

“We didn't do a good job against their zone in the second half,” KWC coach Todd Lee said. “We hadn't worked on that, and that's the coach's fault.”

The Panthers held a lead late in the first half, 32-26, with 1:04 left. South Carolina finished the half with a 7-0 run, capped off by a contested 3-pointer by Malik Cooke at the horn, giving South Carolina a 33-32 advantage.

Cooke had 11 points for South Carolina. Freshman Anthony Gill led the Gamecocks with 14 points.

When the teams came out of the locker room for the second half, it turned into a South Carolina show.

The Gamecocks' defense picked up, contributing to KWC going scoreless over the first four-and-a-half minutes of the second half.

Meanwhile, the Gamecocks found the shooting range. They went on a 22-6 run over the first eight minutes of the second half to take control.

South Carolina scorched the nets for 54 percent shooting from the floor, hitting 12-of-22 in the second half.

The Gamecocks were also good from long range, hitting 4-of-6 on 3-pointers in the second half.

The Panthers were led by Anthony Young, who had 12 points and eight rebounds.

There was some concern for Young, though, after he left the game in the second half with a bruised knee.

“He's got some soreness and some swelling, but he's got ice on it and will be day-to-day,” Lee said. “There was no structural damage.”

Dominique Dawson added 10 points and five rebounds for KWC. Marseilles Stewart finished with nine points and 10 rebounds

as KWC outrebounded South Carolina 39-37.

KWC made just 17-of-61 shots from the field for 27.9 percent.

It really struggled in the second half, hitting 8-of-33 for 24.2 percent from the floor, and 2-of-11 on 3-pointers for 18 percent.

South Carolina made 23-of-54 from the floor for 42.6 percent. SC is coached by Darrin Horn, a former Western Kentucky University standout and head coach.

The Panthers will have a couple of days to recover and prepare for a trip to No. 10 Pittsburgh on Monday night for another exhibition game.
