Panthers heat up in 86-65 victory

Box Score

Kentucky Wesleyan College found the range against the Prairie Stars on Saturday.

The No. 18 Panthers upended homestanding Illinois-Springfield 86-65, and they had plenty of long-range firepower.

The Panthers made 14-of-21 from 3-point land for 67 percent. Cardell McFarland made 4-of-5 on 3s on the way to 20 points to lead KWC.

More impressive was what KWC got from its power forwards from beyond the 3-point line.

Marseilles Stewart hit all three of his 3-point tries and scored 17 points. Chris Williams was 3-of-5 (11 points) and Anthony Young was 2-for-3 on 3s. That amounted to 8-of-11 shooting from long range.

"I didn't realize we made 14 threes until I looked at the stat sheet," KWC coach Todd Lee said. "We were trying to get the ball in the post, and they sagged and helped, which left the outside open. Some guys made some shots."

Williams nailed three straight 3s midway through the second half to give KWC some breathing room with a 19-point lead, 63-44.

"Chris stepped up and made a couple of 3s against their zone," Lee said. "He made three in a row, and that was it."

Illinois-Springfield tried to double Young in the post to start the game, and the 6-foot-7 junior found open shooters on the outside. Young finished with 13 points and seven rebounds.

"They were doubling Anthony, he kicked it out and got other people involved," Lee said. "Cardell got us off to a good start. Everybody contributed."

The Panthers made 34-of-59 from the floor for 57.6 percent.

KWC improved to 12-2 overall, 5-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference heading into its big rivalry game at the University of Southern Indiana on Monday.

The Panthers played like they were building some tempo going into that game at the PAC Arena in Evansville.

"Yeah it was a good game, the bench was energized, it was a good road win," Lee said. "I was worried about this game and the trip up here. It was an in-between game, but our guys showed some maturity and did a good job."

To duplicate the results, KWC will need to keep up the same kind of defensive intensity it showed in the first half against Illinois-Springfield.

"We did well in the first half, but in the second half we were a little flat," Lee said. "We still held them to 41 for the game. At times they put five guys out there all under 6-3, just ran motion, and ran it right at you. When they do that, we've got some matchup issues, where we've got a 6-7 guy out there guarding a 6-3 guy."

The Prairie Stars (4-11, 0-8) were led by Brandon Snowden's 12 points.
