Box Score

The Hawks of Rockhurst University never knew what hit them on Thursday night.

Kentucky Wesleyan blistered the nets at a 69 percent clip in the first half and went on to hammer the visitors from Kansas City, Mo., 97-63 in a Great Lakes Valley Conference men's basketball game at the Sportscenter.

Riveted from the start, No. 18 KWC scored 11 of the game's 14 points, and the overmatched Hawks never caught flight.

"We came out focused and ready to play," KWC head coach Todd Lee said. "I thought everyone contributed in this one."

KWC (11-2, 4-2 GLVC) had more incentive than normal, Lee said.

"We put the league standings on the board," he said, "and even though we came into this one 3-2 we were in last place in the East.

"I think that created a sense of urgency for our team, and tonight we played with the type of urgency we need to be successful in our league."

The Panthers made 18-of-26 floor shots in the first half, moving the ball crisply in the half court and often beating Rockhurst back in transition.

"I was really pleased with the way we passed the ball," Lee said. "We finished the game with 23 assists, and that's a very good number for us. The tone was set there in the first half."

By intermission, Kentucky Wesleyan held a comfortable 46-25 advantage.

The Panthers then scored the first eight points of the second half -- shooting in front 54-25 -- and it was over.

KWC took its largest lead of the game (44 points) at the 4:02 mark when Brandon Johnson's driving layup capped a 10-2 run and made it 93-49.

The Panthers were led by Anthony Young, who came off the bench to produce game-highs of 20 points and 14 rebounds. Cardell McFarland, who also did not start, finished with 15 points and five assists.

Young and McFarland returned to the fold after serving one-game suspensions for "conduct detrimental to the team," according to Lee.

Marseilles Stewart, who did start, had 12 points and 10 rebounds.

"Marseilles brings a lot of energy and physicality to this group," Lee said. "He also played very well Saturday against Drury (22 points, six rebounds), so it's good to see him producing like he is. He's tough, and he'll get on the boards for you."

Kwan Waller scored 11 points and Tyler McManaman added 10 for the Panthers, who won their third in a row.

Wesleyan finished at 57 percent from the floor (37-of-65).

Rockhurst (4-11, 2-5) got 17 points from Najja Nicholson and 15 from Aaron Morrissey.

The Hawks shot just 36 percent from the field and were thoroughly pounded on the glass -- KWC winning the rebounding battle 48-26.

The GLVC grind continues for Wesleyan with two more games between now and Monday.

"We've got two big games coming up on the road," Young said. "We've got Illinois-Springfield Saturday, then we turn around and play at Southern Indiana on Monday, and we've got to be ready to play."
