Box Score

Quarterback Chris Owen threw for 335 yards and four touchdowns to lead Kentucky Wesleyan College to a 34-28 win over Pikeville on Saturday at Steele Stadium.

Owen completed 25-of-39 passes, which offset the Panthers being held to 19 rushing yards on 21 carries.

The contest was back-and-forth early. Matt Wilson's 21-yard field goal put the Panthers on the board, but Pikeville answered with a 5-yard scoring strike to take a 7-3 lead. Just over a minute later, Owen connected with Joey Kramer on a 9-yard TD pass that pushed the Panthers back ahead with 4:41 left in the first quarter.

The Bears scored again through the air early in the second quarter to lead 13-10. The rest of the frame, however, was all Panthers.

Owen hooked up with DaMarcus Ganaway for a 66-yard TD strike, Wilson hit a 30-yard field goal, and Vincent Lalonde had a 42-yard TD reception on a pass from Owen that gave KWC (1-1) a 27-13 halftime lead.

The Panthers' onslaught continued to open the third quarter, with Thomas Gordon scoring on a 21-yard reception that extended the lead to 34-13 with 11:56 left in the frame.

Pikeville didn't fold, however. Trevor Hoskins threw his third TD pass with eight seconds left in the third quarter, then he ran for an 8-yard score with 9:56 to play that cut the Bears' deficit to 34-28.

After forcing Wesleyan to punt on its last two possessions, the Bears took over at their own 13-yard line with 3:28 left. They drove to the Panthers' 38, where they faced a third-and-8 and time for one play, which set up a Hoskins throw that Cliff Thomas intercepted at his own 10 to seal the win.
