Knights finish on 9-0 run to top Panthers

Bellarmine closed the game with a 9-0 run to earn an 87-81 victory over Kentucky Wesleyan College in the Great Lakes Valley Conference opener for both teams on Thursday night at the Sportscenter.

The Panthers (4-1) took an 81-78 lead on a layup by Katie Behrens with 3:01 remaining in the game. KWC did not score again.

The Knights (3-2) scored the final nine points from the free-throw line -- four apiece from Allison Matheis and Jalissa Chatlos, and one from Lauren Jones.

Kourtney Rhoads led KWC with 14 points. Kristen Rowe and Bianca Barton had 13 each.


The Panthers, who led 37-34 at halftime, connected on 31-of-70 field goals, including 8-of-21 3-pointers. KWC was 11-of-16 from the line.

Bellarmine was 26-of-50 from the field, 13-of-27 on 3s and 22-of-28 from the line.

The Panthers held a 36-31 rebounding edge and forced 24 turnovers while committing 18.

Jones scored 25, Chatlos 23, Matheis 19 and Kylee Hamilton 14 for Bellarmine.
