Panthers still adjusting to new lineup

Game Notes

The personnel moves will take some time to become more efficient for Kentucky Wesleyan College.

The No. 14 Panthers get another chance to see their people work into different roles tonight when they host Salem International at the Sportscenter. Tipoff is at 7:30 p.m.

KWC (6-1) went with the new lineup for the first time on Tuesday, when it beat Cumberland (Tenn.) University 86-65 at the Sportscenter.

Anthony Young took well to going to center, scoring 22 points and pulling down seven rebounds.

"Anthony is better at the five (center)," KWC coach Todd Lee said. "He's got good defensive movement, and he's a very good rebounder. He can take a (center) out on the floor and shoot the 3."

Cardell McFarland was the other major change among the established starters. The 6-foot junior was averaging 22 points a game while also playing point guard. McFarland went back to his natural spot on the wing as a third guard. KWC was able to make that move with Brandon Johnson getting healthy enough to join the starting lineup at point guard

Johnson had been out with a knee injury since early in preseason practice.

McFarland didn't have his usual scoring output, getting nine points and going 0-for-4 from 3-point range.

McFarland will have to get more accustomed to playing in the small forward-wing spot.

"Some of our sets for the three are to shoot jump shots," Lee said. "He's got the ball in his hands less, so we need to look at it in practices and games. We've got to do some different things to get him some more opportunities to score the ball. Cardell is more of an attack the basket-kind of player. We will make some adjustments to get him some better opportunities."

Salem (5-4) will offer KWC the chance to work more against full-court defensive pressure and zone. Most teams in the Great Lakes Valley Conference guard man-to-man.

"They are athletic, and they are a good team if they get going," Lee said. "It's one of those games where if they get confident it could be a tough night for us."

Demetric Walker is a 5-11 guard who leads Salem with 18.8 points a game.
