Panthers drop heartbreaker to Concordia-Selma

Concordia-Selma College made some key plays in the last five minutes to pull out a 36-35 win in the season finale for Kentucky Wesleyan's football team.

The Panthers were down 34-29 when Quadarius Wallace returned a short kickoff 55 yards to push them in front 35-34 in Selma, Ala.

Disaster struck for KWC, though, on the 2-point conversion try.

The pass from KWC quarterback Chris Owen was intercepted by Jeffrey Ward and returned 100 yards for two points for Concordia, pushing the Hornets in front by the final margin.

The Panthers were able to get one more possession after forcing Concordia to punt. Owen was intercepted on third-and-10 to end their last chance.

"It was the freakiest loss we've had," KWC coach Brent Holsclaw said. "We let them stay in the game. To lose it on a 2-point try is just heartbreaking. It was a tough way to end the season."

KWC finished 5-6, more wins than it had in any of the last 11 seasons.

Concordia's Jeremy Roberts hit Ricky Dixon with a 9-yard pass with 2:21 left in the fourth quarter to take the lead.

But Concordia was penalized for excessive celebration after it scored to go up 34-29 and kicked off from its own 15, which set up Wallace's return.

Concordia (4-4) had trimmed its deficit to 29-28 when A.J. Ward scored from 1-yard out.

Owen also had touchdown passes to Vince Lalonde and DaMarcus Ganaway. Lalonde had an 80-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Matt Wilson also kicked three field goals for the Panthers.
