Wilson helps KWC defeat Parkside

Box Score

Andree' Wilson believes if something is free, then take it.

Like a free throw.

The Kentucky Wesleyan College senior got to the free-throw line 12 times and made 11 on the way to scoring 19 points on Monday in a 78-64 win over Wisconsin-Parkside.

The 6-foot-4 forward from Spanish Town, Jamaica, didn't start playing basketball until he was in his mid-teens, but he learned how important free throws were early in his career.

"That's the one thing we get free, and we need to make use of it," Wilson said. He is one of the Panthers' top free-throw shooters at 86 percent.

Wilson did most of his damage for No. 17 KWC at the free-throw line in the second half, hitting all eight of his attempts over the last 7:33 of the game.

"Andree' has been doing that since junior college," said Desmond Stephens, who struggled shooting from the field (3-of-13) but still managed 15 points.

The Panthers improved to 14-1, 3-0 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference with three players scoring in double figures.

KWC coach Todd Lee wanted his guards to look for Wilson more in the second half because the backup forward can be very effective when he gets the ball on the block.

"At halftime, I told the guys we weren't getting the ball to the post enough," Lee said. "He's shooting (86) percent and I was a little upset because we could've pounded the ball inside more. Last year we used to run the press break for Andree' to get him to the foul line."

The Panthers were clearly in control from the time they sprinted out to a 34-18 advantage with 5:42 left in the first half. They extended their lead to 74-53 with 4:13 to go, but they never could finish burying Parkside (6-7, 1-3).

They were getting good chances in transition, but Stephens had a hard time connecting on a couple of alley-oop attempts. Stephens had seven assists and five turnovers.

"We were trying to make the spectacular play in transition instead of getting layups," Lee said.

"I missed a couple of them," Stephens said. "If I see it I try to go get it."

The Panthers also got 12 points from Chris Williams. They shot 40.7 percent from the floor (24-of-59) and 33 percent from 3-point range (6-of-18), and were 24-of-32 from the free-throw line for 75 percent.

Zach Blesich scored 19 points to lead Parkside. Jeremy Saffold added 17 points and Grant Johnson had 13. Parkside made 42.3 percent from the floor (22-of-52) but hit 7-of-13 of its 3-point tries for 54 percent.
