KWC shuts down Hill, rips Rockhurst

Box Score

Kentucky Wesleyan coach Todd Lee's number one mission on Monday afternoon was to contain high-scoring Rockhurst senior guard Aaron Hill.

It was mission accomplished for the 10th-ranked Panthers.

Holding Hill to just 1-of-12 floor shooting, Wesleyan rolled over the homestanding Hawks 80-55 at Mason-Halpin Fieldhouse in Kansas City, Mo.

"I'm very proud of our guys," said Lee, whose club improved to 18-2 overall and 7-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. "This was a tough road trip, and Rockhurst is very, very tough at home. They'd won their last seven games in here.

"Marico Stinson did a great job on Hill, as did the other players we rotated on him during the course of the game. He's one of the greatest shooters I've ever coached against. To hold him to 1-12, well, that's pretty incredible."

The Panthers also got a huge game off the bench from Andree' Wilson, who had game-highs of 19 points and 13 rebounds in 27 minutes.

"Andree' has gotten better and better as the season has progressed, and we're looking for him more on the inside," Lee said. "He's quick and he's long and he's active. He wants the basketball in there, and he knows what to do with it when he gets it."

Wesleyan was in control throughout, building a 40-23 halftime advantage. Rockhurst (11-7, 6-3) pulled within 10 points at the 15-minute mark, but the Panthers stitched together an 8-0 run to reclaim control.

"I just thought we did a great job as a team," Lee said. "In one way or another, everyone who played contributed to what we were able to accomplish here today. It was our third game in five days, and we really put an emphasis on concentration and focus coming into the game.

"If not for some missed layups and missed foul shots (KWC was 7-of-14 in the first half), I felt like we could have had a 25-point lead at halftime."

The Panthers also got a fine game from Maros Zuffa, who scored 14 points and finished 5-of-8 from the field.

"I was impressed with his total floor game," Lee said of Zuffa. "He did a good job at both ends of the floor, and that's what we're looking for out of Maros."

Point guard Desmond Stephens added 11 points and a game-best eight assists, and Stinson scored 10 points. Chris Williams added seven rebounds.

Tyler Knust led the Hawks with 11 points, and Jake Meyer added 10. Hill, who averages 22 points per game, added nine points and made all seven of his free-throw attempts.

KWC outrebounded Rockhurst (47-36) and forced the Hawks into 19 floor errors.

Rockhurst finished just 32 percent from the field, making 18-of-56 shots.

"Our defense got it done for us," Lee said. "We did a good job against a dangerous club."

KWC returns to action on Thursday at Northern Kentucky.
