Young powers No. 14 KWC to victory

Box Score

Anthony Young didn't mind moving from power forward to center for the No. 14 Kentucky Wesleyan College men's basketball team on Tuesday night.

The 6-foot-7, 258-pound junior finished with 22 points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots to drive the Panthers past visiting Cumberland (Tenn.) University 86-65 on Tuesday night at the Sportscenter.

Young did most of his damage in the second half, when he scored 16 points and helped Wesleyan (6-1) pull away from the overmatched Bulldogs (3-6), who played without leading scorer Walter Simson, a 6-9 sophomore center who has already returned to his native Germany for the Christmas holidays.

Foul trouble limited both Young's production and time on the court in the first half, but he made up for it in the second half.

"I picked up two fouls pretty early in the first half, and I knew I'd be sitting until halftime," Young said. "I was anxious to start off well in the second half. I hit a 3-pointer, the guys were doing a good job getting me the ball down low -- I was in a zone there for a little while."

KWC led 40-26 by intermission, but Panther head coach Todd Lee was less than pleased.

"We didn't defend well to start off the game, and Cumberland outrebounded us in the first half, which was disappointing," Lee said. "I don't know if it was the long layoff (12 days since KWC's last game) or what.

"I thought we came back a little better in the second half."

KWC, which led by 24 points with just over four minutes to play, also got 15 points and two steals from guard Kwan Waller, whose 6-of-8 floor shooting was pleasing to the KWC mentor.

"I was really pleased with Kwan's shooting percentage," Lee said. "He was very active and did a good job out there for us."

Marseilles Stewart came off the bench to score 14 points, Chris Williams added 11 points and three assists, and Cardell McFarland -- held to nine points -- paced the Panthers with four assists.

Junior Brandon Johnson, playing his first game for the Panthers, scored five points and dished three assists from his starting point guard position.

Wesleyan's bench proved to be a major factor, outscoring the Bulldogs' reserves, 24-5.

"That's always good to see," Lee said. "When you're getting production off the bench like that, it's always a good thing."

Wesleyan sizzled from the floor, making 29-of-46 shots for 63 percent. KWC also drained 23-of-28 free throws for 82 percent.

Cumberland hit 21-of-46 shots from the field (46 percent) and made 17-of-27 foul shots (63 percent).

Each team finished with 25 rebounds.

Kentucky Wesleyan remains at home on Thursday night against Salem (W. Va.) International. Tipoff is at 7:30, following a 5:15 women's game between Kentucky Wesleyan and Central State (Ohio).
